Guidelines for participation in the Japanese Calligraphy Competition in Canada
 

The 10th Annual Japanese Calligraphy Competition in Canada is an open juried competition for adults and students practicing Shodo (Japanese calligraphy) in Canada with selected works to be exhibited at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre, Toronto, Ontario from November 4th to November 12th, 2017.

Eligibility & Number of Entries

One entry only by a resident in Canada, adult or student (18 years and under)

Schedule

Deadline for Submission: Saturday, February 28, 2017

Jury review: March 2017 in Japan

Exhibition: Saturday, November 4 – Sunday, November 12, 2017
(Daily and weekends 11:00am to 4:30pm)

Award Ceremony: Sunday, November 5, 2017 at 2:00pm

Competition Requirements

Unmounted calligraphy paper, maximum size of 24.5cm x 33.5cm with rubbed sumi ink figure in any style finished with signed name or seal or both. Low quality liquid ink will bleed when wet mounted resulting in disqualification. Enclose with completed ENTRY FORM/ENTRY CARD and cheque only.

Shipping & Delivery

Postage or courier costs for out of town entries to be covered by entrant and must be postmarked by midnight February 28, 2017. Mail or deliver c/o SHODO CANADA, 388 Arden Place, Waterloo Ontario. N2L 2N7. Entry must be rolled in tube or packed flat with rigid board, packaged securely and clearly labeled. All entries must be picked-up on Saturday, November 12, 2017 from 6-7pm. Please arrange to have your entry picked up. Any unclaimed entries will be returned by regular post.

Exhibition

Based on the judges’ discretion and the resources of the competition, all work, to the extent possible, will be professionally wet mounted on silk scrolls. An exhibition of all work will be displayed for public viewing.

$90 Adult
$50 Student

General Rules

  • Entries must strictly adhere to the Competition Rules
  • Entries must be the original work of registered entrant
  • Works entered in this competition may be released for publicity
  • Participation in the exhibition and mounting of work shall be regarded as fair compensation
  • Reasonable care will be taken in looking after entries but SHODO CANADA and related persons will not be responsible for loss or damage due to shipping to and from entrant’s address
